Welcome
2012 Hunters!
Thank you for visiting us here and considering San Juan
River Outfitters for your 2012-2013 hunt. New hunt dates and seasons have been
announced by the NM Department of Game and Fish . What follows are our
selections for your 2012-13 hunt program.
We have drawn on our experiences in previous years and scouted extensively to
arrive at suggestions for an application strategy for 2012-13. There is always a
trade-off between very premium hunt units and your odds of drawing a tag.
Premium hunt units always draw a higher number of applicants, thus stiffer odds
of drawing a tag. The good news is that you are allowed to enter up to 3 choices
on a single application. Our job is to suggest some units for you to select as
your first choice, as well as providing some "fall-back" units to list as your
second or third choice. Should you not draw your first choice, you still stand a
good chance of drawing your second or third choice and enjoying a quality hunt.
We historically have had very good success in getting you drawn for a hunt. One
big advantage to choosing a hunt with San Juan River Outfitters is that we'll
submit your application through the outfitter pool, which greatly improves your
odds of drawing success. Due to national economic downturns, the total number of
applicants will probably be lower this year, which only improves your odds of
drawing. There has not been a better time to be successful in drawing a tag.
We know that this year may continue be a tough one financially for many hunters.
With this in mind we've continued and expanded our "Do-It-Yourself" (DIY)
program of hunts to offer a greater number of very affordable hunts. You can
apply for a premium hunt, enjoy the much improved odds of applying in the
outfitter pool, and do it on a budget. We'll work with you to find a hunt that
fits your budget.
REMINDER:IF YOU HAD A NM ELK OR DEER TAG LAST YEAR, BE SURE AND FILE YOUR
HARVEST REPORT. YOUR 2012-13 APPLICATION WILL BE DISQUALIFIED IF YOU DO NOT
REPORT. THE DEADLINE FOR REPORTING IS PRIOR TO FEBRUARY 15, 2012. Go to the
Mandatory Harvest Reporting page and follow the instructions. You may also
call 1-888-248-6866 and file your report over the phone. If you have trouble
reporting or questions regarding this process, call (505) 476-8038.
If you wish to discuss some of your options or have questions, feel free to call
me or send me an e-mail. I know the application process can sometimes seem
complicated, but believe me, it's actually pretty simple. There have been a
number of new developments this year and significant changes in the application
process. These changes and new procedures are outlined in our ”Booking a Hunt
Page". Please be sure you read these new developments as it changes the
procedure significantly from last year. I will be happy to take your information
over the phone and make your application for you. Be aware, however, that all
you'll need to select a 2012 hunt and apply with us is available right here at
this web-site. Work your way through this page and then proceed on to "Booking a
Hunt" and you'll be on your way. Good luck and be sure to let me help you if
needed. We want to be your New Mexico outfitter of choice and our service begins
here. Our first step is getting you drawn for a tag.
Again this year , we will be offering our "Camera Hunts" for elk
and deer. Every year we've had non-hunting persons in camp who've come to
photograph and enjoy the excitement of elk and deer in the rut. We've come to
realize that often these folks are having as much or more fun than their buddies
with the license. These low priced packages are a great way to be guaranteed an
exciting trip to the woods should you not be successful in drawing a tag. See
our "Camera Hunts" page for more details.

These are our main hunts for 2012-13. We suggest these as a "First
Choice" on your application. You may also enter one of these as a second or
third choice for an improved chance of drawing a tag. Separate applications
must be made for each species, i.e. Elk, Mule Deer, or Oryx. Up to 4 hunters
may apply on a single application. (2 for Oryx)

Archery Elk
Unit 34, Archery, Bows Only, September 1-10, Either Sex Elk, High Demand
License Fee ($91 NM Resident/ $780 Non- Resident), all "Outfitted" Hunt

for a "First Choice" elk bow-hunt. This is a 10 day season, and gives you
great flexibility in choosing your hunt timing and also the chance to extend
your hunt. This is the first elk hunt of the year and delivers great early
season action, before the herd bulls gather a crowd of cows to bust you.
This is my own personal favorite)

suggestions for a "First Choice" elk bow-hunt. This is a 10 day season, and

are very vocal and responsive. This hunt will keep your heart pumping. This
is our most popular choice)
Hunt Code: ELK-2-304
Unit 36, Archery, Bows Only, September 1-10, Either Sex Elk ,High Demand
License Fee($91 NM Resident/ $780 Non- Resident), ), “Drop Camp” and all
"Outfitted" Hunt Packages Available. (This is a super hunt and among our top
suggestions for a "First Choice" elk bow-hunt. This is a 10 day season, and
gives you great flexibility in choosing your hunt timing and also the chance
to extend your hunt. This is the first elk hunt of the year and delivers
great early season action before the herd bulls gather a crowd of cows to
bust you. Unit 36 shares the same great genetics of Unit 34 and great elk
numbers. You are hunting the same bulls and great genetics of the adjoining
Mescalero Apache reservation. )
Hunt Code: ELK-2-313
Unit 36, Archery, Bows Only, September 13-22, Either Sex Elk , High
Demand License Fee ($91 NM Resident/ $780 Non- Resident), "Drop Camp” and

Hunt Code: ELK-2-314
Unit 45, Archery, Bows Only, September 1-22, Either Sex Elk, Standard
License Fee ($91 NM Resident/ $555 Non-Resident) , “Drop Camp” and all
“Outfitted” hunt packages available. This is the classic backcountry
wilderness hunt you dream about. This is a real adventure in some of the
most spectacular elk habitat in New Mexico. This is the Pecos Wilderness
which lies in the high alpine zones surrounding the highest peaks in New
Mexico. This is classic elk country amongst the pines and aspens in high
mountain parks, divided by live cold streams and dotted with springs and
wallows. This hunt is not for the faint of heart or lungs. It is in steep
rugged terrain and altitudes at and above 10,000 ft. The unit has good elk
numbers, but due to its difficult access, scares away most applicants. The
relatively low number of applicants however, means that your odds of drawing
this unit are very good. Due to the remote nature of this hunt and the horse
packing requirements, there will be a variable additional charge over and
above our base pricing on whichever package you choose. Additional charges
are based on a number of factors including your group size, services
requested, length of stay, etc. Call me and talk to me about this hunt and
we can see if it is a good fit for you and your party. This can be the
wilderness elk hunt you want to check off on your life’s “To Do” list. Call
me.

It's a legendary mule deer unit, but we have some darn good elk hunting here
too. This unit is a sleeper, because it doesn't look like typical elk
habitat, but ends up being a great hunt for our hunters. We have seen
populations steadily increase here and some big old bulls . This is a tag
that you are very likely to draw and makes a great "back-up" selection. I
recommend that you place one of our premium units such as 34 or 36 as your
first choice and follow it up with Unit 2 as a second or third choice. This
strategy will go a long way toward ensuring you will draw a tag and enjoy a
quality hunt.

more well-known sister units 2B and 2C, is a good unit with some great
hunting opportunity. Consider it for your second or third choice.

2013 Sonora, Old Mexico, Mule and Coues Deer Hunts
We have worked the last few years on expansion of our mule deer and Coues
deer program into the State of Sonora, Mexico. We have developed some
exciting properties and relationships in Mexico and are currently doing our
homework in learning and hunting these properties. To date we have only
hunted these new ranches with staff and invited current clients. We are
working to gain experience and strengthen our rapport with the various
landowners, guides, and staff we'll hire. We are actively hunting these
ranches now in 2012 and will be planning more hunts there for January of
2013. These hunts are a fantastic opportunity for a very different and
exciting deer hunt. The terrain, the people, the food, and the deer are in a
class of their own. Spend a little time looking at our photo galleries for a
taste of these exotic hunts. Call me and discuss your interest in one of
these invitation only hunt opportunities. I am looking for serious hunters
with good abilities to help explore the possibilities of this new venture.

Turkey Hunts
We will conduct spring turkey hunts in Unit 34, the
Sacramento Mountains of south central New Mexico. There are great turkey
numbers here and this is a good opportunity to add a Merriams to your slam.
Available dates for these hunts are From April 15-May 10. 2012. Tags are
available over the counter and are not subject to any draw requirements. Your
Non-Resident tag costs $100 (resident $15). You may take two bearded turkeys
with this tag. This is a great way to shed the winter blues in some beautiful
country. We will be hunting in and around the Lincoln Forest. Don't miss this
chance for an unforgettable western turkey hunt experience for Merriam's. We
will set a classic wall tent camp in the middle of prime hunting area. These
camps will be the same comfortable setup we're known for on our elk and deer
hunts. We'll provide all your accommodations, meals, and supplies for any 5
day hunt period in the above range of dates. We'll put you in great
pre-scouted places and get you into some great spring turkey action. You are
responsible for your own calls, blinds, decoys. etc.
Cost / person: $895 for a 5 day all inclusive hunt. (Licenses not included)
