Welcome
2022-2023 Hunters!
Thank you for visiting us here and considering San Juan River Outfitters for
your 2022-23 hunt. New hunt dates and seasons have been announced by the NM
Department of Game and Fish . What follows are our selections for your 2022-2023
hunt program.
We have drawn on our experiences in previous years and
scout extensively to arrive at suggestions for an application strategy for
2022-23. There is always a trade-off between very premium hunt units and your
odds of drawing a tag. Premium hunt units always draw a higher number of
applicants, thus stiffer odds of drawing a tag. The good news is that you are
allowed to enter up to 3 choices on a single application. Our job is to suggest
some units for you to select as your first choice, as well as providing some
"fall-back" units to list as your second or third choice. Should you not draw
your first choice, you still stand a good chance of drawing your second or third
choice and enjoying a quality hunt.
We historically have had very good
success in getting you drawn for a hunt. One big advantage to choosing a hunt
with San Juan River Outfitters is that we'll submit your application through the
outfitter pool, which greatly improves your odds of drawing success. We have
carefully studied the various hunt opportunities available to you and have built
our hunt program around providing you a quality hunt with reasonable odds of
drawing a tag.
We know that budget can be a big factor in choosing a big
game hunt. With this in mind we've continued and expanded our "Do-It-Yourself"
(DIY) program of hunts to offer a greater number of very affordable hunts. You
can apply for a premium hunt, enjoy the much improved odds of applying in the
outfitter pool, and do it on a budget. We'll work with you to find a hunt that
fits your budget.
REMINDER: IF YOU HAD A NM ELK OR DEER TAG LAST YEAR, BE SURE AND FILE YOUR
HARVEST REPORT. YOUR 2022-23 APPLICATION WILL BE REJECTED IF YOU DO NOT
REPORT. THE DEADLINE FOR REPORTING IS PRIOR TO FEBRUARY 15, 2022. Go to:
https://onlinesales.wildlife.state.nm.us/login and log into your account to file your report. You
may also call 1-888-248-6866 and file your report over the phone.
If you wish to discuss some of your options or have questions, feel free
to call me or send me an e-mail. I know the application process can
sometimes seem complicated, but believe me, it's actually pretty simple, and
we will do all the paperwork for you. There have been a few new developments
this year and some changes in the application process. These changes and new
procedures are outlined in our ”Booking a Hunt Page". Please be sure you
read these new developments as it changes the procedure a little from last
year. I will be standing by to take your information over the phone and make
your application for you. Work your way through this page and then proceed
on to "Booking a Hunt" and you'll be on your way. Good luck and be sure to
let me help you if needed. We want to be your New Mexico outfitter of choice
and our service begins here. Our first step is getting you drawn for a tag.
If you would like to jump start the process and get your application going
right away just click on the button below and it will automatically send you
a form we need filled out for compliance with Game and Fish. Follow the
onscreen instructions and fill out the form. I will be in immediate contact
with you and we'll get your application strategy figured out and submitted.
We'll be done in just a few minutes.

Archery Elk
Unit 34, Archery,
Bows Only, September 1-14, Either Sex Elk, High Demand License
Fee ($90 NM Resident/ $773 Non- Resident), all "Outfitted" Hunt Packages
Available. (This is a super hunt and one of our top four suggestions for
a "First Choice" elk bow-hunt. This hunt has recently gone from 10 days
to a 14 day season, and gives you great flexibility in choosing your
hunt timing and also the chance to extend your hunt. I consider this to
be one of the best elk hunts in the nation. This is the first elk hunt
of the year and delivers great early season action, before the herd
bulls gather a crowd of cows to bust you, and now with the extended
season, you reach well into the heat of the rut. This is my own personal
favorite) Hunt Code: ELK-2-311
Unit 34, Archery, Bows
Only, September 15-24, Either Sex Elk, High Demand License Fee
($90 NM Resident/ $773 Non- Resident), all "Outfitted" Hunt Packages
Available. (This is a hot hunt and one of our top two suggestions for a
"First Choice" elk bow-hunt. This is a 10 day season, and gives you
great flexibility in choosing your hunt timing and also the chance to
extend your hunt. This hunt is recently timed later and thus nearer the
peak of the rut. Bulls are very vocal and responsive. This hunt will
keep your heart pumping. This is our most popular choice) Hunt Code:
ELK-2-312
Unit 36, Archery, Bows Only, September 1-14,
Either Sex Elk , High Demand License Fee ($90 NM Resident/ $773 Non-
Resident), All "Outfitted" Hunt Packages Available. (This is a great
hunt for the hardcore bowhunter, featuring some very productive (and
tough) wilderness terrain. Among our top suggestions for a "First
Choice" elk bow-hunt. This is now a 14 day season (was 10), and gives
you great flexibility in choosing your hunt timing and also the chance
to extend your hunt. You'll not find a better elk hunting value in the
nation as far as big bulls, lots of them, and 14 days to hunt them! This
is the first elk hunt of the year and delivers great early season action
before the herd bulls gather a crowd of cows to bust you. Unit 36 shares
the same great genetics of Unit 34 and great elk numbers. You are
hunting the same bulls and great genetics of the adjoining Mescalero
Apache reservation. ) Hunt Code: ELK-2-322
Unit 36,
Archery, Bows Only, September 15-24, Either Sex Elk , High
Demand License Fee ($90 NM Resident/ $773 Non-Resident), All "Outfitted"
Hunt Packages Available. (This is a hot hunt and one of our top four
suggestions for a "First Choice" elk bow-hunt. This is a 10 day season,
and gives you great flexibility in choosing your hunt timing and also
the chance to make yours’s a ten day hunt. This hunt is timed as the rut
gets in full swing. (It is a few days later this year and even closer to
the peak of the rut) Bulls are very vocal and responsive. This hunt will
keep your heart pumping. This season timing is our most popular choice.
Unit 36 shares the same great genetics of Unit 34 and great elk numbers
and trophy quality. You are hunting the same bulls and great genetics of
the adjoining Mescalero Apache reservation. For the hardcore hunter,
this unit has some challenging wilderness areas that one of my hunters
referred to as the "Jurassic Park of Elk" (There are some monsters in
there.) Hunt Code: ELK-2-323
Unit 51, Archery, Bows

the Carson National Forest. It has great elk numbers and good odds of
being drawn for a tag. This is the first elk hunt of the year and
delivers great early season action before the herd bulls gather a crowd
of cows to bust you. It is adjacent to the Jicarilla Apache Reservation
and thus enjoys the benefits of some of the great genetics brought in
early by the tribe. We a suggest a Unit 51 hunt as a good "second or
third choice" on your application. Although this unit is classified as
"Standard" it offers a good hunt with great odds of being drawn for a
tag. This hunt offers good trophy quality, and rates high in hunter
satisfaction and success. We had a great year in 2020, with lots of
action and good bulls harvested. Hunt Code: ELK-2-164

Unit 2 is our home unit, and while it is a legendary mule deer unit, it
is lesser known for it's rapidly expanding elk herd. We have steadily

Unit 2 hunt as a good "second or third choice" on your application. We
have watched Unit 2 become a better and better elk unit and have been
having some great action here over the last few years. It offers a good
hunt with great odds of being drawn for a tag. There are ever increasing
elk numbers and trophy quality and I have come to consider it the best
“sleeper” unit in our program. Hunt Code: ELK-2-100

This unit is a sleeper, because it doesn't look like typical elk
habitat, but ends up being a great hunt for our hunters. This is a tag
that you are most likely to draw and makes a great "back-up" selection.)

2022 Rifle Mule Deer
We primarily hunt Unit 2 for mule deer. This
is our home unit. We live here and know this unit. There is no better
mule deer hunting in New Mexico, and there is no better outfitter than
SJRO for your Unit 2 deer hunt. There is recent good news for the mule
deer hunter. The season dates were all pushed one week later and thus
deeper into the rut and migration dates. Deer hunting will be phenomenal
this year with these season changes. Unit 2 in my opinion it is
the finest mule deer habitat in the nation. The record books tell you
all you need to know about the trophy potential of Rio Arriba County.
There are more Boone and Crockett entries for Rio Arriba County than for
any county in the nation. Only Colorado as an entire state exceeds the
number of entries as Rio Arriba County, New Mexico.
Unit 2A, Rifle, October
29-November 2, Standard License Fee ($41 Resident / $283 Non
Resident), Buck Only (Minimum Fork Antlered), all "Outfitted" Hunt
Packages Available (Good second or third choice) Hunt Code:
DER-1-100
Note: The new season dates
will push all seasons deeper into the rut and the migration. Hunting has
been tremendous. Due to the migration and the onset of the rut, numbers
of big bucks soar as the days go by in late October and early November.
This is the year to get that monster buck. John 575-621-6158
Unit 2B, Rifle, October 22-26, Standard License Fee

Unit 2B, Rifle, November 5-9,

top pick for your first choice. Superb hunt with monster muleys in heat
of rut. The new season dates this year make this hunt a real winner. I
don't think you can find a better hunt in the nation. You should have
this hunt at the top of your life's "To Do" list) Hunt Code:
DER-1-113
Unit 2C, Rifle, November 12-16, Quality / High
Demand License Fee ($41 Resident / $368 Non-Resident) , Buck Only
(Minimum Fork Antlered), all "Outfitted" Hunt Packages Available (This
is a carefully managed trophy unit with some huge bucks in it. This unit
is big and rough and is for the serious mule deer hunter. THIS IS A
SUPERB UNIT. Tags are limited here, but it's your chance to kill a
record book deer. The records are dominated by bucks from this county
(Rio Arriba) This is a late hunt and the rut is kicking in. The big boys
will be stepping out. We love this unit but you have to be aware that
you are in for a hunt that will be demanding and require good optics and
a lot of concentration. Truly the best hunt out there for the hardcore
trophy mule deer enthusiast. Make this hunt your first choice and see if
you “hit the lottery” Good Luck!
