Welcome 2012-2013 Hunters!

Thank you for choosing San Juan River Outfitters for your hunt. This is the page where you will proceed with booking a hunt and where we do all that you'll need to get your application submitted into the 2012-13 lottery process for drawing a New Mexico tag.

There are some new developments in the application process which are significant:
1) Every new applicant in New Mexico will be assigned a Customer Identification Number. Setting up your new account and printing out your ID card is the first step in submitting your application. If you have applied in New Mexico in the last couple of years that number will already be in place.
2) New for this year, all hunters must purchase a "Game Hunting License" prior to submitting an application in the drawing. This license will be available online at NM Department of Game and Fish website. You will not be able to submit your application until this license has been secured.
3) All youth hunters, younger than 18, must have a Hunter Education certification number from New Mexico or another state prior to purchasing their “ Game Hunting License” . This now includes youths who are applying for archery hunts, as well as those applying for firearm seasons (archery hunters were excluded from Hunter Education certification in prior years)
4) Only New Mexico residents are eligible for application for antlerless (cow) elk permits in 2013.
5) New Mexico residents are now eligible for application in the outfitter pool and any improved odds of drawing associated with the 10% outfitter set-aside pool ( All applicants resident or nonresident must comply with the mandatory contract filing with a qualified New Mexico outfitter prior to submission of an application in the outfitter pool.)
6) It is unlawful to apply in the 10% set-aside outfitter pool using a New Mexico outfitter number prior to having a valid, signed contract with the same New Mexico outfitter. It is also unlawful to hunt with a license obtained in the outfitter pool designated for New Mexico outfitters without having a valid, signed contract with the same New Mexico outfitter prior to making the application. Those who apply by using an outfitter’s number and hunt on their own will be prosecuted for hunting without a valid license
7) You will pay your license fee upon submission of your application. If you are successful in the drawing, your license and carcass tag will be immediately sent out. If you are unsuccessful in the drawing, your full license and tag fee will be refunded to you. Upon request, your “Game Hunting “ license fee will be refunded to you if you are unsuccessful in the drawing.
8) You will be able to pay for your license and application with an electronic transaction on your checking account, if you prefer this rather than a credit card.
9) All applications must be submitted on-line. Paper applications will no longer be accepted. (I will be happy to take your application over the phone and submit it for you)

REMINDER: IF YOU HAD A NM ELK OR DEER TAG LAST YEAR, BE SURE AND FILE YOUR HARVEST REPORT. YOUR 2012-13 APPLICATION WILL BE DISQUALIFIED IF YOU DO NOT REPORT. THE DEADLINE FOR REPORTING IS PRIOR TO FEBRUARY 15, 2012. Go to the Mandatory Harvest Reporting page and follow the instructions. You may also call 1-888-248-6866 and file your report over the phone. If you have trouble reporting or questions regarding this process, call (505) 476-8038.

You have lots of options for your hunt so we need to work through those so we can develop an application strategy for you. Because of new developments in the process this year, it is important that we communicate closely about your application and make sure all bases are covered so we submit a workable application on time. It is especially important that we get your application right the first time this year because there will be no ability to edit an application once it is submitted. This is different from prior years when we could go in and make corrections after the application was initially submitted. This year you will only be able to cancel your application. I suggest you contact me immediately to start this process. There is always a big rush at the deadline resulting in a crash of the Game Department computers. Let's avoid the last minute rush and get your application in early. It is very easy to have an application rejected on a minor technicality, so I'm here to help you get through the process. I consider this one of my first and most important services to you. Please do not hesitate to call me and we'll get your application going. Call me, John Jaquez, at 575-621-6158.

EASY APPLICATION
If you are ready to apply and want to jump start the process, click on the link below and it will kick off the process. You will get an email copy of the contract we need to get you started. Follow the instructions in the email, electronically sign the contract, and it will get us started. I will be in immediate contact with you and we’ll quickly finish your application.

Unit 45, Archery, Bows Only, September 1-22,
Either Sex Elk, Standard License Fee ($91 NM Resident/ $555 Non-Resident) , “Drop Camp” and all “Outfitted” hunt packages available. This is the classic backcountry wilderness hunt you dream about. It is in steep rugged terrain and altitudes at and above 10,000 ft. The unit has good elk numbers, but due to its difficult access, scares away most applicants. The relatively low number of applicants however, means that your odds of drawing this unit are very good. Due to the remote nature of this hunt and the horse packing requirements, there will be a variable additional charge over and above our base pricing on whichever package you choose. Additional charges are based on a number of factors including your group size, services requested, length of stay, etc. Call me and talk to me about this hunt and we can see if it is a good fit for you and your party. Read and then print out this page for step-by-step instructions on booking a hunt with San Juan River Outfitters.

Since there are very few or no "over-the-counter" licenses for elk, deer, or oryx in New Mexico, the first step of booking a hunt is getting you into the lottery drawing for a license. By choosing us as your outfitter, your application will be processed through the outfitter pool, which greatly improves your odds of drawing a tag. Our commitment is to help you make an educated hunt choice and submit a proper application by the March 28, 2012 deadline. By applying with us you are committing to use our services for your hunt if you are drawn for a tag. All applications this year must be submitted online. If you do not have Internet access or would just prefer for me to submit your application I am happy to do it. Just call me. John 575-621-6158
Getting started. Choosing a Hunt
Your first step will be determining what species you want to hunt; Deer , Elk, or Oryx and then, what weapons choice you prefer; Archery, Muzzleloader, or Rifle. If you will be hunting both deer and elk, you will submit a separate application for each for each species. Deer ,elk, and oryx applications all fall under the March 28, 2012 deadline. Turkey hunts don't require entry into the lottery drawing. Turkey tags are available over-the-counter. Simply call me and schedule the dates for your turkey hunt.

Next you will choose a hunt(s) from our schedule, which you’ll find at left. The various dates, hunt units, weapons choices and hunt options are spelled out here. I know you may have questions when it comes to a final decision on your hunt so please feel free to contact me directly. I am always happy to give you some advice on the pros and cons of the various choices. When you find the hunt that suits you, make note of the “Hunt Code”. You’ll need this code for your "First Choice" slot on your application. I also urge you to consider some alternate hunts to use as a second and third choice on your application. These "backup" hunts greatly improve your odds of hunting in 2012. (I do not suggest you choose the 4th choice option on your application)

Determining the size of your group.

You are allowed to place up to four hunters on each application form. ( 2 for Oryx) Each form is treated as a single unit for purposes of the drawing. Either all of you will all draw or all of you will not. (You are not required to apply as a group. This decision is based more on your willingness to have your party split up. You can each apply separately, but understand one of you may draw and the other(s) not).

Determine how you’ll pay
When you create the application, you’ll be asked if you want other members in your party’s license fees to be charged to your credit card or to use separate cards for each applicant. Visa and MasterCard are accepted. Be sure the Expiration Date on your card is no earlier than 7/12 . This year you will also be able to pay for your fees with an electronic transaction on your checking account.

Gather Application Data
The first applicant in your party will create the application and be assigned a number. Other members may then log on at their convenience and add their information. Each applicant will be prompted for the following:

Last 4 digits of their Social Security Number.
Date of Birth
Residency (NM resident / Non-resident)
Gender
Mailing address
Billing Address on Credit Card
E-mail address (for notification of draw results)
Credit Card Information
Hunter Education Number (Only required if under 18 y.o.)
Mobility Impaired # (Only Required if applying for M.I. Hunt)
Disabled Veteran # (If Applicable)
Create a User Name
Create a Password
Height, Weight, Hair and Eye Color)
Application Number (If attaching to existing application)
Attach Code (If attaching to existing application)
REMINDER:
IF YOU HAD A NM ELK OR DEER TAG LAST YEAR, BE SURE AND FILE YOUR HARVEST REPORT. YOUR 2012-13 APPLICATION WILL BE DISQUALIFIED IF YOU DO NOT REPORT. Mature Bull (Minimum 6" fork or brow-tine) Standard License Fee ($91 NM Resident/ $555 Non-Resident) , "Drop Camp" and all "Outfitted" Hunt Packages Available. Unit 2 is our home unit. It's a legendary mule deer unit, but we have some darn good elk hunting here too. This unit is a sleeper, because it doesn't look like typical elk habitat, but ends up being a great hunt for our hunters. We have seen populations steadily increase here and some big old bulls . This is a tag that you are very likely to draw and makes a great "back-up" selection. I recommend that you place one of our premium units such as 34 or 36 as your first choice and follow it up with Unit 2 as a second or third choice. This strategy will go a long way toward ensuring you will draw a tag and enjoy a quality hunt.

The records are dominated by bucks from this county (Rio Arriba) This is a late hunt and the rut is kicking in. The big boys will be stepping out. We love this unit but you have to be aware that you are in for a hunt that will be demanding and require good optics and a lot of concentration. It's a legendary mule deer unit, but we have some darn good elk hunting here too.

Unit 45, Rifle, October 13-17,
Mature Bull (Minimum 6" fork or brow-tine), Standard License Fee ($91 NM Resident/ $555 Non-Resident) , “Drop Camp” and all “Outfitted” hunt packages available. Look at the early hunt dates. Lots of rut still going on for this one! This is the classic backcountry wilderness hunt you dream about. It is a real adventure in some of the most spectacular elk habitat in New Mexico. This is the Pecos Wilderness which lies in the high alpine zones surrounding the highest peaks in New Mexico. This is classic elk country amongst the pines and aspens in high mountain parks, divided by live cold streams and dotted with springs and wallows. This hunt is not for the faint of heart or lungs. This can be the wilderness elk hunt you want to check off on your life’s “To Do” list. Call me.

2012 Sonora, Old Mexico, Mule and Coues Deer Hunts

We have worked the last few years on expansion of our mule deer and Coues deer program into the State of Sonora, Mexico. We have developed some exciting properties and relationships in Mexico and are currently doing our homework in learning and hunting these properties. To date we have only hunted these new ranches with staff and invited current clients. We are working to gain experience and strengthen our rapport with the various landowners, guides, and staff we'll hire. We are actively hunting these ranches now in 2012 and will be planning more hunts there for January of 2013. These hunts are a fantastic opportunity for a very different and exciting deer hunt. The terrain, the people, the food, and the deer are in a class of their own. Spend a little time looking at our photo galleries for a taste of these exotic hunts. Call me and discuss your interest in one of these invitation only hunt opportunities. I am looking for serious hunters with good abilities to help explore the possibilities of this new venture.
